What is Self-Care, and Why Do I Need It?

“Self-Care is how you take your power back.” -Lalah Delia

Self-care is widely misconstrued as being tied to indulgence and luxury; commonly thought of as something that most people are unable to afford, or simply unnecessary to daily life.

Another misconception of self-care is that it is a selfish act. Focusing on our own well-being is seen by some as a moral failure, or as a waste of time.

Here, I am offering you a different perspective in response to a common question of, “What is self-care?”

Self-care is about your relationship with yourself- not just externally, but also internally.

A take on self-care that I love is referring to it as an act of self-preservation

To preserve is to maintain something in its original or existing state.

A self-care practice includes the basics, such as daily grooming and getting proper nutrition.

It is also the act of paying attention to your needs, setting boundaries with others, and engaging in activities that elicit peace and joy.

So no, self-care is not selfish; it is not an indulgence, or something that we opt in or out of - it’s a necessity!

Why Do I Need Self-Care?

You won’t be able to get very far at work, at school, or in your life if you’re unmotivated, unwell, and exhausted all the time!

Focusing on Self-care is how we ensure that we are feeling our best and therefore able to put our best into the things we care most about, such as relationships, careers, and goals.

Proper self-care on a consistent basis gives us the energy we need daily

Intentional self-care is how we begin to practice good stress management skills.

When we are able to manage our stress and minimize the negative effects it can have on our health and lives, we are more likely to achieve our goals, realize our visions of success, and enjoy the lives we have worked so hard for.
