The past is gone; the future is not here; now, I am free of both” -Deepok Chopra
We’ve made it to a new year! That is something to celebrate, after all that we encountered in 2020. I hope that you took some time to reflect on all that you experienced last year; the good, the bad; the lessons, the victories. You survived!
Resolutions vs. Goals
Are you someone that declares resolutions for the new year, annually? If so, have you created any for this year?
I tend to not focus on resolutions. Instead, I state intentions for my year, and list the goals that I would like to accomplish by the end of the year. I usually have a word of the year, as well.
I check in monthly to see how I’m doing with my goals, and to make sure that I’m on track with my intentions; both aligned with my chosen word. This feels more satisfying, and has been more successful for me than traditional resolution setting.
No matter how you decide to walk into the new year, I hope that you do what’s best for you.
Don’t force anything due to pressure from others. No need for a “New Year, New Me!” attitude. I think for some, skipping resolutions and goals altogether this January would be a more self-compassionate way to start 2021.
An Annual Reset…
Speaking of, a similar topic in one of my recent sessions made me want to ask this: when do you mentally (and spiritually, environmentally, etc.) “reset” annually?
The calendar -and society- tends to suggest that January 1st is the time that we should start anew in all areas of our life. I have observed, however, that this is not how everyone operates. I participate in new year activities, but really, my birthday mid-year is my reset period.
A reset: to set, adjust, or fix in a new or different way (dictionary.com).
During my reset, I reflect on my growth. I remember all of the moments that I enjoyed, and with whom. I make a list of things that I’d like to continue working on. I daydream about new experiences I’m interested in, or new places that I want to go. I prepare for a new year.
Is your reset period in the spring? Fall? Your birthday? During a holiday, or around a family tradition? I think that it’s a good idea to know when yours is, so that you can better benefit from pressing your own “Refresh” button on life.
