Fear of Uncertainty
"How can you know what you’re capable of if you don’t embrace the unknown?" ~Esmeralda Santiago
When is the last time that you were faced with uncertainty?
Perhaps you are currently in the middle of such a time.
Many changes in circumstances can cause us to feel uncertain. The future becomes "the unknown".
A lay-off.
A death.
A chronic diagnosis.
A divorce.
An unplanned pregnancy.
As a collective, one experience we can all relate to is the uncertainty the 2020 pandemic brought us.
Feelings such as…
Scary. Dark. Confusing. Overwhelming. Debilitating.
Lead to questions such as…
What will I do?
What will happen to me?
How long will things be this way?
Moving Through Uncertainty
Rely on Your Strengths.
Remember other times in your life when you’ve been faced with the unknown. What helped you through that time?
Stick to the Facts.
It’s easy to fall into patterns of common cognitive traps (e.g., jumping to conclusions, fortune telling, catastrophizing, etc.) during a time like this. Try to gather as much evidence as possible, and avoid negative thought loops.
Lean on Your Faith.
Uncertainty can be disorienting. Remembering your beliefs and values can help you to stay grounded and focused as you navigate through it.
Reflection Questions
How do you respond to periods of uncertainty?
What strengths have you used to navigate times of uncertainty?
What are your religious/spiritual beliefs regarding times of facing the unknown?
I hope that this was helpful!
As Always, Be Well!
