Where is the [Self] Love?!

Where is the [Self] Love?!

"We are exactly as we are meant to be." - Melody Beattie

Today, I would like to invite you to check in with yourself.

On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being the lowest amount of love, 10 being highest amount of love), how loving would you say you have felt towards yourself recently?

If your score was a five or lower, perhaps you struggle with self-love. Or, maybe you are having a low moment. If either is true, do you ever wonder how you can work on this?

bell hooks describes in her book, All About Love why one may struggle with Self-Love:

"…most people who think they are not lovable have this perception because at some point in their lives they were socialized to see themselves as unlovable by forces outside their control."

"Self acceptance is hard for many of us. There’s a voice inside that is constantly judging, first ourselves and then others. That voice enjoys the indulgence of an endless negative critique."

The journey to improving your relationship with yourself may be long, but not impossible!

Melody Beattie, in her book Codependent No More explains,

"We can cherish ourselves in our lives. We can nurture ourselves and love ourselves. We can accept our wonderful selves, with all our faults, foibles, strong points, weak points, feelings, thoughts, and everything else. It’s the best thing we’ve got going for us. It’s who we are, and who we were meant to be. And it’s not a mistake. We are the greatest thing that will ever happen to us. Believe it. It makes life much easier."

" We can be gentle, loving, listening, attentive, and kind to ourselves, our feelings, thoughts, needs, wants, desires, and everything we’re made of. We can accept ourselves all of us. Start where we’re at, and we will become more."

Just start with you are today. You can take small steps to increasing your love of self right now!

Today, write 5 things about yourself -anything at all- that you like and/or are proud of.

You can also start a practice of writing 3-5 “wins” at the end of each day. These can be accomplishments, or things you did to feel good throughout your day.

I hope this was helpful!

As Always, Be Well!
