Do You Have Community?
“Restoring relationships and community is central to restoring well-being.” ~Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D.
Have you heard of the term “Community Wellness” before?
You can establish a healthy source of community by belonging to one or more communities, and being actively engaged and supported by members in that community.
A community is defined as, “a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.”
Being active in a community is a great way to practice good Social Self-Care.
“People who are more connected to family, friends, or their community are happier, physically healthier and live longer, with fewer mental health problems than people who are less well connected.” —Mentalhealth.org.uk
Maintaining Social Self-Care can include things like spending time with people whose company you enjoy, regularly communicating with friends and family, supporting others, accepting help from others, and having new experiences with others.
I hope that you feel a sense of belonging, not only from your community, but also from other sources. I hope that you spend time and enjoy life with family, friends, and romantic partners.
Reflection Questions:
Do you belong to one or more communities?
How does belonging to your community make you feel?
How do you show up in your community?
If you don’t feel like you have a strong sense of community, how might you make changes in this area of your life?
As Always, Be Well!
~Jessica
